Company profile and background
MTS Research Limited is an independent investment research company which since 1989 has been providing specialist technical analysis of stocks and other financial instruments to buy side institutional clients across the world’s major financial markets.
Technical analysis is an investment timing technique used widely among traders and financial professionals to forecast the future direction of prices through the study of past market data.
MTS Research provides technical analysis services in the form of regular publications and consultancy advice, catering for a number of different investment approaches from absolute or relative returns to long-only and long/short. MTS not only generates investment ideas for its clients, but also highlights the potential risks and rewards associated with individual markets and stocks, as well as providing support for the results of other types of research, for example quantitative and fundamental.
The company has a global client base of blue-chip financial institutions ranging from hedge funds to the largest fund managers and stretching from Los Angeles to Tokyo, via New York, London, Frankfurt and Hong Kong.
MTS was founded in 1989 at the request of Morgan Grenfell Investment Services Limited (MGIS), the ERISA arm of Morgan Grenfell Asset Management (subsequently Deutsche Asset Management), by Peter Beuttell, a Portfolio Manager at MGIS between 1987 and 1989.
Peter is a qualified Chartered Accountant and self-taught market technician with over 30 years experience. At MGIS, Peter managed money in European, Australasian and Far East markets for US clients, such as American Airlines and American Petrofina. He achieved first quartile performance on their behalf by blending fundamental and technical analysis in his investment decision-making.
After an initial focus on the EAFE markets (Europe, Australasia, Far East), the company has now expanded its coverage to include the Americas, thanks to the recently-completed two-year Knowledge Transfer Partnership with the University of Plymouth. The resulting software – the Technical Overlay Program (TOP) – allows fund managers to access an immediate Technical view on any market, sector, stock, bond yield, currency or commodity within their selected universe.
Peter provides the research and analysis for MTS Research and is supported by a team of five, based in Penzance and London.
Recognition and Success
MTS Research has been going for over 20 years, and is recognised professionally for its expertise, independence and authority, with articles published regularly in the leading industry publication, the Society of Technical Analysts Journal.
MTS Research has twice been rated top in the Extel survey, a study of opinion, trends and perceptions in the investment community, despite having a smaller client base than many of its competitors.
Analysing Japan weekly since 1989 and daily since 1994 allowed MTS Research to recognise that a major top-building process was occurring in the 1999-2001 period and to predict the downside pattern with the knowledge that 2001 was not the low. Articles by MTS published in the Society of Technical Analysts Journal and Money Week correctly identified autumn 2002 and March 2003 as potential turning periods.
The company’s study of the Great Bear Markets (GBM) also provided MTS with an informed insight into what awaited investors over this decade.
In 2007 it again became obvious that markets were at risk, although they proved weaker than even MTS was expecting. In October 2008, they were also able to say that markets had not bottomed, and that the low was 3-8 months away, subsequently recognising that a significant bottom was near in early March 2009.
